Homebrew developer xart has announced on the QJ.NET PSP Development forums that slimChoice is now at version 1.0.4. For the uninitiated, slimChoice is an eLoader menu that combines a hot look with some equally hot functions.

Those who have already had experience using eMenu should have no problem with using slimChoice since it uses the same control scheme. Here's a list of what's been added since version 1.0:

slimChoice - Image 1v1.0.4

  • Time Zones
  • iPos Letter Popups while scrolling collection.
  • Circle on homebrew browsing will take you back to the Time Zone menu

v1.0.3.1

  1. Minor tweak in coding, nothing changed in the workings

v1.0.3

  • file scan for homebrew speeded up

v1.0.2 very short life

  • cache file for homebrew list scan

v1.0.1 & v1.0.11

  • Bug fixed CPU&BUS clocking issue, now clocks down to 222MHz

Choice v1 - Image 1If you loved Sony PlayStation Portable homebrew developer xart's easyChoice application for the original PSP and you're wishing you could take it along as you upgrade to the PSP Slim, wish no more because xart has just released  slimChoice.

The developer dropped by the QJ Forums earlier and gave us an update on the his slimChoice v1.0. slimChoice is set to pack all of the core features of easyChoice that you loved. If you're not familiar with the aforementioned app, it gives your PSP a nice GUI (graphical user interface) that dishes out aesthetics as well as functionality.

Here are some highlights of xart's post regarding slimChoice v1.0
  • Custom Firmware (3.51 M33 Recommended)
  • Not compatible with eLoader as the internal workings for launching homebrew are not the same.
  • No bootstrap yet, to be provided later or by a third party developer perhaps.
  • MP3 Player on it's own, "Melody" is provided as a standalone and will be launched via Choice as well as the XMB.
  • Rewritten from the ground up taken all the best stuff from easyChoice and getting rid of the not so good stuff in easyChoice.
  • Uses the same button arrangement as eMenu so users of eLoader that have been using eMenu.
Go ahead, download the file below to check out the wonders of this neat PSP application.

PSP Slim & Lite - Image 1A few days back, we found out that Fanjita and the rest of Noobz don't forget their promises when they released the HEN/Downgrader for firmware 3.11. Today, Noobz released another promised homebrew application, eLoader version 1.000.

Before you go "but we already have Pandora to downgrade", this version of the eLoader is actually aimed at running those "tricky EBOOTs" on PSPs that already can and the PSP Slim & Lite. Chris Swindle explains:

As a lot of people are finding out the PSP Lite is unable to run 1.50 kernel, this means that old homebrew games are not able to run on the PSP Lite custom firmware, however eLoader makes it possible to run some of these older games without needing to recompile them. So I hope all you new PSP Lite owners enjoy getting to see some of the old homebrew games running on the new device.

Groundwork for this project was laid out by Saotome, through the first EBOOT loader. This is basically for the homebrew that HEN and CFWs can't load (read: old homebrew). The major feature for this release of the eLoader would be "support for launching via HEN and custom firmwares, including the PSP Lite" (from the readme). Another plus in this eLoader is that homebrew devs who don't own a PSP Lite can use this to check out if their creations are compatible with the PSP Lite.

Though amidst the pros come the limitations. Here are the known limitations as listed on the readme:
  • Can't run most kernel-mode applications.
    • That means anything that emulates ISOs/UMDs.
  • Some minor system calls are still unsupported.
Anyway, we'd advise you guys to go through the readme file as it details important stuff about the application like the installation instructions, troubleshooting, and navigation controls, among others. You know the drill, download's below. Enjoy!

Thanks much to magick2401 for the tip!

GuitarHelper v.5B from Joel Van - Image 1

Still having problems with those hard riffs and chords? Don't worry because homebrew developer Joel Van is back with an improved version of GuitarHelper. The application, as the name suggests, assists and teaches users on how to play the guitar. GuitarHelper was originally from guitargod1134, but Joel Van has been the one updating it for the past few weeks now.

Now in version .5B, Joel Van promised that GuitarHelper now has lesser bugs and more content. Despite this, take note that this version still uses the same navigation system for v.5a, so the program shouldn't feel any alien at all. This is written in Lua and un-compiled. The EBOOT, by the way, is LUA player direct loaded into lowser (version .16 unmodded).

Anyway, be sure to go over the Readme file a thoroughly before using this on your PlayStation Portable (PSP). All important details including controls and loading instructions can be found there. And as for the improvements made on GuitarHelper v.5B, here's the complete changelog:
  • NEW EBOOT with NEW BACKGROUND & ICON (same music)
  • NOW FRONT SCREEN, "press start to enter"
  • NEW FLEXIBLE TUNER now lets you tune to STANDARD, DROP D, DOUBLE DROP D, FLAT (1/2 step) and DROP C, the tuner has a menu system to navigate these variations
  • SCALES SECTIONS NOW INCLUDES 7 MODES and 7 SCALES
  • 2 NEW CHORD CHARTS, AUGMENTED AND DIMINISHED
  • DETAILED EFFECTS CATALOGUE THAT EXPLAINS HOW THE EFFECT WORKS AND PLAYS AN EXAMPLE
  • NEW AUDIO COMPRESSION METHOD
  • MINOR GUI CHANGES
  • BUG FIXES

Guitar Helper 0.5A - Image 1

Joel Van has released a new upgrade for guitargod1134's GuitarHelper application, which teaches people the basics of using a guitar. This version, called GuitarHelper v0.5a, has a ton of additional features as well, and comes in two different modes depending on your firmware.

Here's what Joel Van had to say about this new version:

Guitar Helper .5a has had some major changes and this is my first project that I've worked on without any major aid! I've written most this script, so alot of this stuff is my work and ideas. I've re-written the script now so that there is more memory management and this gives me the ability to implement more and more content without stressing our little PSP's ram!

You'll find the changelog below, and it's pretty extensive. We suggest you check out GuitarHelper's readme, as there's also been some changes in the control scheme as well as two different versions: one for the OE/1/ELOADER/HEND users, and another for users of 1.5. In any event, enjoy your download and rock on!
  • Another New Eboot with NEW MUSIC, Background and ICON
  • A new menu system that features SUBMENUS and MORE interactivity
  • NEW GUI (new backgrounds, new text, new graphics)
The rest of the changes after the jump!

PSP2600, now with PSP GU rendering options. That snow will roll a lot smoother down the hill. - Image 1Okay, since you'll probably want to know what's new with Zx-81'a PSP2600 Atari 2600 emulator for the PSP, we'll cut right to the chase. It has the multiple keyboard mapping feature (thanks to Pou-chan) from the PSPAtari emulator v1.0.6, but more importantly, PSP2600 sports a new graphics engine that runs off the PSP GU for rendering purposes.
  • Is it faster? Sadly, no - for this, the "soft render" modes from older versions of PSP2600 are still available, as they work faster.
  • But is it smoother? Oh, yes. Zx-81 says in the changelog a lot smoother.
Hopefully the future version should improve on the rendering engine so that it can deliver speed and smoothness off the PSP GU (Of course, since we're not highly experienced coders with such arcane knowledge, let alone Zx-81 himself, it's probably him who'll reveal whether or not he can push this feature harder). In the meanwhile, v1.0.4 is available for download below, for 3.03 OE, and (hopefully) 2.x under eLoader.
