He still seems to want to shut himself until its official unveiling though, and while all that's well and good, we're at least given a date to expect when his latest project will drop. |

While the man behind the critically acclaimed God of Wars series has made a clean break from Sony, David Jaffe isn't one to turn his back on his gaming roots. In an interview conducted by Level Up, Jaffe talks about the lessons he's learned in the past and how it will affect his future games now that he has his own development studio with Eat Sleep Play.Jaffe mentions that two of the biggest lessons he's learned from working with his recent PSN released Calling All Cars! was the fact that people still judge games much in the same way regardless whether they're a US$ 60 title or a US$ 10 one. Also, the many critiques that were thrown in about the game's single-player mode made Jaffe realize that nowadays a game's single player aspect "was never meant to be anything other than training." With this in mind, he says that any game in the future will have a greater focus on its multiplayer aspect because that's apparently what people want. As it is, Jaffe is still pushing through with the three game deal he had with Sony. While it wasn't specified exactly which platform we'll be seeing the next David Jaffe masterpiece, he assured everyone that he wanted to branch out starting from the small lessons he's learned with his previous game titles such as the Twisted Metal series and, of course, the God of War series. There were hints, however, of exploring the PC as a possible platform for his future games. Considering that Eat Sleep Play is still taking its first few steps into the game development industry, Jaffe also wanted to be able to take small innovative ideas and branch out from there. While he can't exactly expect to compete with the bigger game titles and gaming companies out there, he's hoping that he will be able to make his own mark despite everything. He stressed his point by saying: Whether we succeed or fail, I guarantee you we're going into our first original PSP title or PS3 title for Sony with that intent, in the DNA of the design which is, "Okay, the appreciative nods are not good enough for us. We want a hit. We want a lot of people to play and love our game. We want to be able to stand toe to toe with the big $60 Blu-Ray titles." It's not going to come from doing really cool, nice-looking arcade games that are appreciated and people pat us on the head and say, "Hey, that's really cool you're keeping that alive." It's going to come from being able to go toe to toe with these bigger titles on certain levels. You can check out the full interview through the Read link below. |

Spike TV invaded San Diego for the Comic-Con recently, and their footage is finally up. Regular host Geoff Keighley was able to grab a hold of a couple of videogame icons and celebrities, and interview them in this edition of GameHead. Today's video has a quick sit down - actually, they were standing up, rather - with none other than David Jaffe, who was talking about his Eat Sleep Play project (details of which can be found here).
Past the 3:02 mark of the episode though, we have Jaffe pitted against videogame movie director Uwe Boll. We never thought that both names could ever be uttered in the same sentence, much less be inside the same camera frame, but here they are. And if you've got both Jaffe and Boll in the same equation, you can't not ask the question: "Will there be a God of War movie directed by Uwe Boll?" Jaffe answered this honestly with a resounding "No." Boll, though, had a different response. "Wait until you see Postal, and then you judge." In fact, Boll already even has a rather... fitting actor to play Kratos. Viggo Mortensen. AKA Aragorn. Uhm, right. Watch: |

It's quite a shock to learn that David Jaffe left Sony - and by extension, the rights to the epic God of War series - to create a new company with Incognito's Scott Campbell. IGN managed to get hold of Jaffe to get some facts cleared up about him leaving Sony.He said that he and Scott Campbell already talked about the idea of creating their own company for more than a year, and made steps toward that decision for the last eight months. IGN also asked Jaffe why he wanted to start a new game development company rather than develop the games within Sony, to which he replied that there are some areas in the gaming world that he would like to explore, but Sony hasn't ventured into yet. Eat Sleep Play, the company Jaffe and Campbell started, will focus more on smaller, downloadable but nevertheless kick-ass games, much like Calling All Cars. They're going to do either 2D or 3D games, whichever will work for the games that they're going to produce. While Jaffe left Sony, Eat Sleep Play is exclusive to Sony for both console and handheld games, something that Jaffe is not averse to, claiming that he had great friends from Sony and is looking forward to a long business partnership with the PS3 makers. But what about the rights to Calling All Cars and God of War? Jaffe replied: I don't retain the rights cause I never had them. All the games I've done are owned by Sony. I kind of hoped they would give me the God of War rights as a going away gift but, no such luck. Hell, I was even asking for small stuff. Nothing big. I told them I'd be cool if they gave me the rights to something tiny; like the rights to make God of War steak knives. But did I get it? Hell no. I got nothing. Man, I coulda sold the s*** out of those things! Jaffe also gave some facts about the upcoming Twisted Metal game for the PSP, Twisted Metal: Head On. There are no plans of connectivity between the PS2 and PSP versions of the game, but he will take IGN's suggestion of downloadable tracks for Twisted Metal PSP and run the idea to Sony. While there's no official news yet about Jaffe's first original project, he said that the game will be officially announced within 8 to 15 months should all go well. The game will be in medium to hardcore action with multiplayer gameplay, and will be less "arcadey" than Calling All Cars. |

Remember when David Jaffe, the developer of God of War and other highly-respected games, said that he has a big announcement to make? Well, he just blogged that he is leaving Sony to start his own company. It will be known as EAT SLEEP PLAY and Jaffe will be joined by the founder of Incognito Scott Campbell in this endeavor. So far, the company already has a total of three game console/handheld exclusive deals with Sony. David Jaffe mentioned that they are hoping to release their first original title some time in 2008. Waiting for that doesn't mean though that we'll be having some dry spells. The company already plans on putting out a port of Twisted Metal: Head On to the PlayStation 2 this Christmas season. Jaffe gave a few points on why this PSP to PS2 port will rock your socks off:
