Super Mario Toy is back, this time with three classic mini games with a Mario twist to them. You can now play Mario as Pacman, Mario in a Galaga-type air fight (spitting out fireballs in place of bullets), and Mario shooting down koopas in a Duck Hunt game. It's always nice to see first time homebrew developers try out their hand in making simple, yet addicting homebrew games for the Sony PlayStation Portable. First time homebrew programmer, theb1rdm4n, created a classic top-down shooter entitled Birdman's Shooter.
The game is basically a shooter which resembles the old-school arcade game, Galaga. Birdman's Shooter pits you against endless waves of aliens which try to destroy your ship with a steady rain of laser fire. You're given the opportunity to gain a power up to attack with two laser beams, but aside from that the game is simple and good, in terms of gameplay and design. Seeing as this is the first version of the game, minor bugs are bound to pop up. One known issue noted by the developer is that enemies tend to get stuck against one another on higher levels of the game. However, theb1rdm4n assures gamers that this bug will most likely be corrected inthe next version. For those of you interested in checking out a quick yet addicting shooter, then feel free to download Birdman's Shooter through the QJ.NET download link below. Download: Birdman's Shooter |

You cant beat the classic Atari games when it comes to replay value, and with the release of Atari Classics Evolved on the PlayStation Portable it's guaranteed to keep you glued to your handhelds just to beat your high score ("just a bit more, a bit more... oh noooooes!"). Here are two new gameplay videos for the game, featuring Super Breakout and Tempest, to join the likes of Missile Command, Asteroids, Battlezone and Centipede.
As some of you might remember, Super Breakout plays like Pong, only you destroy bricks instead of having to volley the ball around with another player. Meanwhile, Tempest is a shoot-em-up game that emulates a 3D thmosphere. It's like Galaga, only simpler in graphics, but semi-3D in nature. Check out the vids for yourself! Atari Classics Evolved will be released on November 15.

Ever wondered what playing tennis in space would feel like? More so, ever wondered what playing tennis in a quasi 8-bit Zero-G court would feel like? Namco Bandai's cooking something for you, and it goes by the name of Smash Court Tennis 3. Now, in light of the previous Pac-Man course we've shown the other day, we've got something from GameTrailers that features yet another mode in Namco Bandai's tennis title: Galaga Tennis Gameplay.
As the name of the video implies, that's just what this mode is all about - getting to play tennis in a Galaga-themed court. The interesting catch in this mode is that you have to "catch" you opponent: win against them to make the alien invaders take him/her away. The background is a mix of 8-bit and 3D object, and can get trippy at times, but hey!, that's the fun of it, of course! |

Is there any particular video game that still haunts you up to this very day? One that, if you died today, you'll be sure to be earthbound because of this one "unfinished business"? Okay, so that was morbid. But that pretty much drove the point home now, didn't it?
I first got introduced to the wonderful world of gaming consoles through the NES, otherwise known as the Family Computer in Japan. Now this little wonder brought me some very fond and special memories growing up, thanks to its wholesome and now-retro 8-bit graphics. Games like Galaga, Battle City, Twinbee, Contra, and of course, the immortal Super Mario Bros. kept me company during stale afternoons, with ignored chocolate-covered donuts sitting beside me across our living room floor. And then came a whole new generation of gaming consoles. Handhelds like the Game Boy and its successors, and even the simplistic Game & Watch, to the more powerful modern consoles we have today, all played a part - no matter how minute - in my formative years. They certainly kept me off the streets, for sure. I guess I only have them to blame for my not having developed that "streetsmart" gene in my system. Even after all those games and gaming machines, however, I still couldn't let go of that one NES game that I never got to finish: Adventure Island. Not that I didn't find the adventures of Master Higgins interesting or exciting enough for my own amateur taste, back then. But with the onslaught of newer game titles coming along, and with the irrational, almost neurotic desire of finishing a level without any scratch or bruise or diminished life for my Master Higgins, I did not realize that I had slowly and unwittingly pushed it to the back of the game shelves. And then I got busy with other things - Tetris, Metroid, school, dates, friends, sneak-outs at night, the X-Files, Castlevania, high school prom, college admissions, Need for Speed Underground, Sex and the City... and good ol' Master Higgins remained in the webbed corner of my consciousness. Not to be disturbed, and more importantly, never to disturb me. Until we met again, that is. Read on to see if we share the same hang up experience over that one unfinished game, and to see what else is on QJ's list by clicking on Full Article! |
