You may love 'em or hate 'em but let's face it, the contributions of bosses to gaming are almost as important as those of the good guys themselves. In this edition of the QuickList, we're honoring the cream of the crop among the bad guys. The criteria? We scrutinized each based on what he had to offer and what he does best. Whether it's style, toughness or infamy, we took them by what they had to offer and we found 10 left standing. Again, this is all subjective and your opinions are as good as ours. Here they are:

10. The Polar Bear (Ice Climber)- After hours of grueling debates on the subject of whether he's even a boss or not, the Ice Climber Polar Bear has eked his way to a cliff-hanging tenth spot on this list. There's not a lot to say about him in terms of difficulty, but gamers from the past know what time it is when they see the hot, red briefs over the off-white fur. It means you're taking too long to climb and he'll force-advance the level with a jumping fart.

Usually, there's no problem getting to his face and pounding his toes with a mallet, but when playing with a friend or sibling, it sparks an unfriendly war of who gets to nail him. The only way to make sure that you do the honors is to sabotage your partner with guerrilla tactics like unorthodox body checks and busting the floors where they stand. We won't be surprised to hear about domestic violence resulting from this scenario.

The rest of the bad-ass bosses await after the jump!

Killzone Liberation - Image 1

Get to know how it was like working on one of the most successful games for the PlayStation Portable, Killzone: Liberation, as well as a few tidbits of info about Killzone for the PS3 in this interface designer interview. We get you the facts and only the facts that a Guerrilla Games employee can only be privy to.

Martijn Venrooy began the interview by elaborating on his role as interface designer - that is, making sure that all interactive things such as menus and the HUD are all easy to use, visible and user-friendly. He then details out the interface design process in four easy steps - creation of a functional design, then a visual design to tie things up nicely, coding so that each part of the interface does what it's supposed do, and then animations are finally applied.

When asked about his current projects, Martijn said that he's a bit tied up with Killzone for the PS3: "There’s always an icon which needs be enhanced or some screens that need a design update. There’s enough work to do!" He didn't share anything about the game itself, though, so no joy on extra details.

What he did reveal was the fact that the Guerrilla team was quite overwhelmed by the videogame community's reaction to Killzone: Liberation. His statement, verbatim:

The moment the reviews came in, both from the offline and online media, was one big rush! It doesn’t get much better than big gaming sites like IGN and Gamespot rewarding you with good scores. That gave us a lot of energy. Every day plenty of new reviews came in, most of them enjoyed it. To be honest I’m pretty proud of that. In the end you’re trying to create a game which will be played instead of shelved.

Well, not much info gleaned in this review, but at least we know that Killzone for the PS3 is in very good hands. We also appreciate the fact that today's videogame developers are getting the love they deserve for their masterpieces, no matter what format they come in.

Scenes from battles at Killzone: Liberation - Image 1

Well, we found a gamer over at Video Gamers of America who managed to pick up the new update for Killzone: Liberation. As you can see below, he's taken quite a number of screenshots of the action.

What you'll be seeing below are screens from some of the multiplayer objectives out for Guerrilla Games' shooter, such as Capture the Flag and Team Deathmatch. There's also some regular deathmatch screens in there, though we're not entirely sure which action shots are for which game. Regardless, there are a lot of them, which means more gaming enjoyment for all of us as we patiently wait for our Killzone downloads to finish.

Killzone: Liberation - Image 1While Killzone 2 might not reach the shelves any time soon, we've got an interview for you guys to pass time. From Killzoneunit.com, Killzone: Liberation's producer Steven Ter Heide talks about his life with Guerrilla Games and the first game he ever produced.

What exactly is his role at Guerrilla Games? Apparently, he's the guy who does the scheduling and balancing work - currently his doing this for Killzone 2. It's his job to make sure they're on the right track, that they're moving close to the game they're creating step by step. He worked on Killzone: Liberation for the PSP as his first game and he obviously enjoyed it. "It’s great to see early concepts come to life" he says.

During the interview, Heide also expressed his joy and satisfaction when people at E3 went straight to multiplayer after touching their handheld demos. With the focus being on making Killzone: Liberation enjoyable in multiplayer, he commented "we knew we were definitely on the right track", after getting positive comments during the big conference. "After the first 2 minutes... people want to get their hands on it themselves, because it just looks like fun!" he adds.

The rest of the interview went on with him talking about his favorites from Liberation, level 2.1 being his favorite stage and Cobar's revolver his favorite weapon. When asked about making a sequel, he said he just wants more of the same since the original already has a lot of features.

Lastly, he was asked to finish the following sentence: “Working at Guerrilla Games is similar to slaving in the Helghan Mines because…” His response? "…I’m not answering this question as I am the slave-driver. Now get back to work!"

Jack is evil.

For some people, gaming isn't an escape. It's infiltration and warfare. In a recent article from the Escapist, we find out that this is the life of online guerrilla marketers, and you can bet that you've probably already met some of them online.

"Jack" is an expert in a unique kind of online fraud. Jack spends weeks trying to infiltrate online communities and gaining the trust of others. Maybe he's spent weeks giving fair, unbiased advice. Then he inserts a recommendation: buy this game. And everybody believes good old unbiased Jack. And nobody suspects that Jack has been hired by the game's publisher or developer to pimp the game. Nobody suspects that they are being controlled.

And "Jack" is good at what he does. If the community is mostly young 15-year olds, he blends in. He says that his personalities range from a 10-year-old girl to a 78-year-old man across different ethnicities, stereotypes, and ages. "It's evil," he says. "I'm evil."

"I will make you buy this commercial item or visit some site using any means necessary."

According to our official QJ Dictionary of Mental Health, escapism is avoiding reality by indulging in an entertaining or imaginative activities. So, whenever you don't do your errands because you are busy playing video games, Dr. Phil and Oprah would call that escapism.

So there's a very sick betrayal there: we enjoy video games because they let us escape reality; we become somebody else in another world where we have big guns or swords or muscles and it's perfectly healthy to blow up your enemies and it's easy to tell who the "good guys" and "bad guys" are (yes, we sometimes bring in reality and have huge arguments about consoles or whatever, but for the most part, we just live to play).

We are escapists. And in the end, we fall prey to the advice of people who are only pretending to be escapists like us; people who have studied us, pretended to be our friends, know too much about us, and know very well which products are paying them for real.

killzoneDon't you just love the smell of gunpowder in the morning!? We do, and to prove it, we dug up another explosive video for Killzone: Liberation's single player mode.

Killzone: Liberation is the sequel to Guerrilla Games' Killzone for the PS2. In single-player mode you get to play as the protagonist from the first game, Jan Templar, as you attempt to work with your own little crack team of experts (or not, let them die if you want and use a tank!) to infiltrate Helghast territory and rescue people held hostage by the group.

What do you get to see in this gameplay video? Explosions! Doors being blown open by C5! People flying from shrapnel! You know, the good stuff!

Since demo discs have been coming out already, you can be sure of one or two things. Either the hype will keep growing, or people are going to giggle at the thought that you're blowing stuff up with pea-sized bullets. PEW-PEW-PEW!

Killzone: Liberation

If you thought that Killzone: Liberation couldn't get any better, it just did (and to think that it hasn't even been released yet!). Guerrilla Games has just recently announced some more extra features that all you trigger-happy fans have been always wanting to see. Yes, there's the third-person "smart" camera, co-op play, and "Ad Hoc" multiplayer games. But then, the developers are further beefing up the features with innovative interactive gameplay and downloadable content.

Not only will zombies rise up to the occasion on Halloween, because on the same day, the official website for Killzone: Liberation will launch side by side with the game and finally welcome players into a global arena for them to test their skills in. The website will have two new maps for players to download, where they can wreak havoc and test their prowess against people from the the next country over.

After the October 31 roll-out, another chapter for the story will also be available, extending gameplay beyond the UMD version. Not much is known when exactly this new chapter will be available, but just to get you worked up, it is reported to  contain four additional missions, new maps, and challenging games. This game definitely brings in a new definition for "jam-packed" and "replay value".

Way to go! Spread the love, and wreak havoc!

BOOM!, goes the weasel...

After the previous E3 announcement, Guerilla has released more screens from their upcoming PSP exclusive title Killzone: Liberation. This game will utilize an intelligent third person camera system that will give the player the perfect overview for capturing the true essence of the environment, so hopefully we won't get tripped up behind walls anymore. The single player campaign will consist of over 16 missions throughout a variety of environments, and you can expect to see some familiar faces including Templar and Rico. Weapons like sniper files and crossbows to vehicles such as tanks and hovercrafts will all be at your disposal, and you'll need to make good use of the new Tactical Command System to command your AI teammates as well. Challenge games can also be found to sharpen your skills, and there will even be cooperative gameplay and up to six player battles wirelessly. Game sharing will also be supported, so your friends will be able to play with you even if they don't own the retail copy. Hopefully this third person title won't be too hard to control on the PSP, but only time will tell for sure.
