The lucky folks over at gadget website T3 have gotten their hands on a pre-production model of the recently-announced Sony PlayStation Portable redesign. They've also taken pictures of the redesigned PSP as well as a few comparison pics with the original PSP.

According to T3, the redesigned PSP - referred to in some quarters as the PSPSlim, PSP Lite or PSP Slim & Lite - is 5 mm thinner and 3 mm shorter than the original. It's also lighter thanks to a brand new UMD mechanism.

Viewed from the front, it still looks pretty much the same and still has a 4.3-inch screen. The infrared port is now gone, and the Wi-Fi switch is now on top of the unit. Check out the images below for a closer look at the new PSP.

Neubit's disassembly of the Chotto Shotto for night-vision conversion: the first step towards perversion. Next step: cloning a Hilton sister. - Image 1You've seen Neubit's Acidmod of Chotto Shotto into an IR-based night vision camera, and suffice to say, you pray one's not looking down on you as you sleep. Keep praying. F00 f00 tells us that Neubit got around to posting in Acidmods, Part One of his how to turn Sony's Chotto Shotto into an invasion of privacy lawsuit waiting to happen a night-vision camera.

We'll leave it as a Read link for the technically inclined to work on, that they may have dark-room recording capabilities, too. We can explain some of the details of the mod (Part One), not to mention how night-vision works, so that people who are still confused as to how night-vision devices (NVD) work will understand the mechanics behind this mod.

Ohyes, Ninja OWNS the night - Domingo Chavez, current RAINBOW Six - Image 1This mod falls under the category of active IR NVDs: they use infrared light (e.g., a remote control IR diode) as a "flashlight" to light up the night. The NVDs you might be more used to are passive NVDs used in the military, such as the one pictured left. They rely on low-light amplification with image intensifiers to lift the blanket of the night. IR NVDs are not normally used in military applications, as the opposition can detect the IR flashlight with their own IR NVDs.

IR-wavelength light is invisible, so our eyes can't pick them up. The Chotto Shotto camera can pick up IR light, but an IR light filter in the assembly filters out the IR spectrum. Part One of the mod involves taking this filter out of the picture, which (in low-light conditions) turns the Chotto Shotto into an active IR-ready NVD. Part Two, when Neubit posts it, will cover the IR flashlight built into the mod, but even with Part One, you could probably use a remote control as a mobile flashlight for your purposes, if it's powerful enough.

Now if that purpose involves videos that may require HideMov/HideMedia BETA II video file stealthing... you did not get this idea from us.

Thanks, F00 f00, for getting this idea to us, but we swear we're not getting any ideas (on how to use this thing)!

PSPik!Kididio has just come out with the very first release of his IR Keyboard driver, the PSPik. Yep, that's a very low number, so you know what that means.

The PSPik v0.01 should allow you to use an IR keyboard to interact with your PSP, via the infrared port. Since it's 0.01 right now, you can be sure that this needs some tweaking and testing to work with all sorts of keyboards. That's pretty much where you folks come in.

According to his readme, this is a proof of concept release to get people to help in testing the driver and figuring out which IR keyboards it works with. As he writes on the readme itself (with some minor editing, of course):

This release was tested by some friends of mine, with multiple deployers from ir keyboards like Acer, Hama, Sony, LG and so on, but for every keyboard we must improve the code, so i can not grant any functionality to you, its ver 0.01 first, you can call it a pre-alpha... A working release for the mainstream keyboards will be coming up at the end of this year.

If you have an IR keyboard, and feel very daring, why not help Kididio out? You can pick up the necessary files from us at the download link below, and if you know your German, you could probably offer some input on their forums. Thanks to Shoesy for the tip.

3D Tic Tac Toe - Image 1 3D Tic Tac Toe - Image 2

Homer, from our forums, has released a modification of LMelior's original 3D Tic Tac Toe homebrew game which was released almost a week ago. He added one of the best possible feature of PSP homebrew to this game - multiplayer! If you've gotten way too bored with the AI on the original version then this is the ultimate challenge. You can't brag about beating a computer, but you can brag once you've beaten all your friends that own PSPs with this.

This isn't a WiFi or Infrared multiplayer mod, this simply changes the game so that you can play a friend by using the same PSP. However, one thing you have to make sure is that you play on a 4x4x4 grid. Remember- if you play on a 3x3x3 grid and whoever is first goes in the middle they will win! What your friends don't know can't hurt them...

Update:
Homer has just fixed a bug where you could nto select the grid size when using this version of 3D Tic Tac Toe. The download has been updated so if you have any problems with changing the grid size please re-download the file.

InterfaceLua - Image 1 InterfaceLua - Image 2

Glynnder has unveiled his InterfaceLua version of Luaplayer v0.17 today as his entry for the Summer Coding Competition. This is a complete Lowser (Lua Player file browser) replacement which adds a great new GUI, many improvements and brand new features you wouldn't expect to find in Lua Player. Glynnder has personally admitted to losing some of the changelog, so along with all the features you can find in this post you may even find something in the actual application that isn't here! Here's the feature list:
  • Full browser of files on memory stick
  • High Customizability throughout
  • Home page
  • Lua File execution
  • Image viewer (png & jpeg)- will work on adding bmp support soon
  • GamePic (like icon0)*
  • LibBase*
  • Favorite homebrew execution
  • IrFS- Not completed, will not be for a while.
  • Settings screen/menu
  • Ability to keep a USB Connection throughout
  • Brand new GUI
This application is like a whole new shell for the PSP, comparable to iR Shell but for Lua. You use the analog stick as a mouse which is made a little more precise and easier to use because it has a circular area acting as the mouse 'clickable' area. Of course, you can also launch lua scripts using this application, as well as being able to send lua applications to other InterfaceLua users via infrared.

A skin creation kit along with photoshop PSD's and an in-depth readme are included so that you can customize your InterfaceLua, in essence making your own version of LuaPlayer. All this and many more features are on the way with updates to this program.

We will post details on how this competition will proceed once all of the entries have been posted. Stay tuned to QJ.net!
