This is the rating Metal Gear Solid 4 will probably receive. - Image 1A major initiative to reinforce the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ratings on video games has been launched recently. The company is distributing ready-to-use store signages about ESRB ratings to 10,000 independent and small chain retailers. This is all in an effort to further support store policies against selling video games with Mature-rated content.

According to the press release from ESRB (which is working together with Ingram Entertainment), the distribution was carried out by including the signage materials in the May 28th issue of Ingram's Entertainment Preview magazine. The said issue will will coincide with the June "Entertainment Ratings & Labeling Awareness Month", so you can expect more fancy posters to be put up on your local video game shops and rentals. Apparently, the effort to educate parents regarding what games kids can play is not enough, thus the move to concentrate on video game retailers for the meantime. The signages will also serve as a tool to further educate the general public.

It should not be that much of a bad news for the younger Metal Gear Solid fans, though. It's just a matter of letting someone older buy a copy of Metal Gear Solid 4 for them - or have their parent-slash-guardian with them during the purchase. Well, it seems that the ESRB is really working on letting us know what these ratings mean.

Street savvy mini-games in HOT PXL

It's been quite a while since we've posted anything about HOT PXL. Atari seems to be keeping mum about it, and their website doesn't appear to be that active. All we know is that it boasts 200+ "micro-games" and that it aims to be a pick-up-and-play sort of collection, much like the WarioWare franchise. But more than that, a lot of you have been wondering: HOT PXL is not homebrew... or is it?

If you've seen the other screenshots and videos, and take all these games individually, you'd think that they're all just homebrew. Now, the thing is, you can't take these games individually: there's a backstory that ties all of the mini-games together. As Djon the skateboarder, you go through all these street savvy obstacles as you progress in the game. But more than that, the game has a sold back-up with regards to the its development. It's developed by zSlide, published by Atari, and distributed by Ingram Entertainment. Now based on the strictest, most technical definition of "homebrew", the game isn't brewed at home... Hence, not a homebrew.

In the end, whether this you consider this homebrew or not, it does have its own appeal. In the same sense that some people would release a homebrew collectionpack, HOT PXL is just about as good as it gets.
