If things go well for Sony, PlayTV could eventually land a big footprint on media hub history. In its first week in retail alone, it looks like it's already making waves. Sony's confirmed that it's already shipped 85,000 units of the freeview box across the UK.

PlayTV's out to get its verdict from the reviewers. So far, it's looking swell. But none is so swell as finding out that PlayTV's gone back to having DRM-free copying features on your beloved PSP.

Couch potatoes across Europe will be rejoicing in the coming months because Sony Computer Entertainment Europe will be rolling out its premiere digital TV and movie download services very soon. During an announcement made by David Reeves at the PlayStation Day event, he mentioned the release dates for the PlayTV and Go!Live services. Although it hasn't been officially announced yet, the Sydney Morning Herald says that Sony will be releasing PlayTV in Australia next year. As one of the territories that support Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-T), along with some other PAL countries, PlayTV being available in the land down under is entirely possible. 

So far, SCEE has only officially announced PlayTV for the UK, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. PlayTV is the new feature made specifically for the PlayStation 3. It's basically a black box that lets the console pick up TV broadcasts via DVB-T, and the console can record the programs. The recorded videos can then also be transferred onto the PlayStation Portable.

The Herald says that the biggest problem with PlayTV appearing in Australia may be the local networks' reluctance to have a personal video recorder (PVR) have access to their electronic program guides. We'll probably hear more about it from Sony Australia soon, so stay tuned for updates.

Following SCEE's announcement of new services available for the PS3 and the PSP during its press conference at Leipzig, SCEA announced that availability of the mentioned services is still under evaluation for the U.S. For now, the Go! services and PlayTV will only be available in SCEE territories.

 

The unveiled Go! services and the PlayTV will launch in Europe next year, and the Go!Explore service is currently available in Japan. SCEA tells GamesIndustry.biz:

[We] want to ensure there is the appropriate level of software that would be applicable and bring value to the consumers in North America. [We] will continue to explore appropriate and compelling software that would allow us to bring this feature to PSP in our market.

To make the Go!Video download service available in Europe, SCEE partnered with British Sky Broadcasting. SCEA is currently "evaluating similar types of partnerships in North America." Dave Karraker of SCEA comments, "We understand and respect the consumer interest in this type of service, and we will continue to explore downloadable content options for our territory."
