Tacticalpenguin and his Lua Magazine Viewer - Image 1

Tacticalpenguin (TacticalPenguin, Tactical Penguin, TacticalPinguin) has just released the LMV-Lua Magazine Viewer homebrew application. This app is "a customizeable magazine viewing application which PSP magazine makers can use to distribute their magazines for easier viewing." At the moment, LMV-Lua Magazine Viewer comes with the following features:
  • Allows users to cycle through all the images inside the pages folder with the name page#.png/jpg
  • Allows users to see what page number they're on and to jump to a page number
  • Allows users or magazine makers to change the following settings:
    • Go-to-page/pagenumber menu bar color
    • Go-to-page/pagenumber text color
    • Whether to use jpg or png pages
    • Whether to use a jpg or png splash screen
  • Allows users or magazine makers to have unlimited pages
  • Displays a splash screen on startup (splash.jpg/png)
To accomodate people's preferences, Tacticalpenguin has also made two versions of this application, with one version having an eboot, and the other having none. Also (and as always), make sure to go through the readme file that the developer has included, BEFORE you try placing this application into your PSP.

Besides containing further instructions on how to use LMV-Lua Magazine Viewer, the readme also contains instructions on how to create your own magazine with this application, as well as instructions on how to contact TP, in case you run into any errors along the way.

Considering the fact that the PSP also doubles as a web browser and media player/viewer, this application has the potential to become particularly useful as there are many downloadable magazines out there which are formatted to be viewed on a PSP. Plus, who knows, if people find this app to be easy enough to use, maybe more people out there will be inspired enough to start PSP magazines for the community to enjoy.

xtremeWe've always been a big fan of PSP magazines. Aside from the colorful and vivid images that are fun to look at, there are the informative articles that are entertaining to read as well. Now, Xtreme PSP Magazine is probably on top of our list. Because, you see, it has two things that we are looking for in a magazine: it's about PSP and most importantly, it is free.

Now on its 19th issue, the magazine contains previews of various games such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Ford Street Racing and Gran Turismo Mobile. Aside from the usual content like the sexy gal ad the last time around, this issue tackles tips and cheats for different titles and quite interestingly, homebrew reviews.

When we mentioned homebrew reviews, we know you were all suddenly transformed into rabid wolverines. And so we stop the intro now. Xtreme Magazine issue 19 can be downloaded below.

Imagine PublishingImagine Publishing has just announced its plans to further develop its online marketing strategy this year by launching a new online store, and making its Go Play magazine downloadable online.

IP's online store (imagineshop.co.uk) offers gamers the chance to buy back issues of its magazines, books, and other order products such as its PhotoShop Creative eMag - an interactive DVD which compiles 12 issues of the print publication of the magazine.

Avid readers of Imagine's PSP magazine called Go Play will also be glad to know that part of the company's online drive is making the said magazine downloadable online. This way, they'll be able to reach out to an even larger market and "to make it easier for readers to access content on their PSPs."

Damian Butt of Imagine says, "This is just the start of our online drive in 2007 and we will be pushing our online strategy with full force this year."

However, Butt also said (yes, we know...) that they will continue to produce print publications such as "Play", which he calls their "flagship title". Their PSP magazine Go Play will now be made available exclusively online while other titles will still be published in print.

Issue 8After three months of being silent, the guys behind the PSP magazine, PSP Pro Magazine, has released issue eight. And being in tune with the times, a huge chunk of it covered the PS3 and Wii launch party. Their coverage is complete with photos and some pretty good "narration" of the events that took place.

Plus, there's also a section which tackled the "hackability" of the PS3, PS3 robberies, and the problems that Sony encountered during the launch. Aside from that, the mag also has a section entitled PSP V.300 Fumble. Now that's worth reading for most.

Of course, this issue isn't complete without the usual sections such as the interview, surveys, and other what-nots. As we've said earlier, it has been three months since the team has released a new issue, now, they wouldn't let us wait that long without a good reason.

At first sight, you could see that the mag is newly formatted and the team claims that this is the first time that they did it. If you like or do not like the changes made, you could always share your thoughts on the comments section below. Download link's right there, we trust you know what to do.

Aside from the PSP homebrew games and applications that we try our best to dish out to you, you gotta admit that PSP magazines are also making our lives less boring. Not only does it accompany us in an idle day or a boring car ride, the mags also add a lot of images in our imagination bank- images that are perfect company at almost anytime of the day or night. The best thing about them PSP mags? You need not own a PSP to see most of them, so more access means more vivid imaginations. As to what images pops in your head while reading them, well, that's your call.

So here we are making sure that you didn't miss out on the four most grabbed PSP magazines for the October 2-October 13 period. The stats are of course based on our DL.QJ data, so if you haven't browsed through them, well now's your opportunity to deposit on your imagination bank or to feel certain reactions. So without anymore interruptions, here are the top 4 grabbed PSP magazines.

PSP Insider #1

In every countdown, we start the ball rolling by mentioning the tail ender of the list, in this case, our fourth placer is the maiden issue of The PSP Insider. It seems that people love what the PSP Insider crew has dished out, such as interview with homebrew dev Zx-81 and a feature on Exophase's gPSP, a GBA emulator program for the PSP handheld. They have infused new blood on the PSP magazine circuit and we could only hope that they don't lose their spunk with their coming issue.

PSP MAG 2

For those who can read Farsi and enjoy playing Sony's popular handheld device, you might find this bit of news interesting: the second issue of PSP Mag has just been released.

As with most PSP mags released, expect that this version - although in a language not all of us can understand but are willing to read so long as someone kind enough translates it for us - will have all the usual treats like details on various games for the handheld and other bits of useful info on PSP peripherals and such.

So if you want to know exactly what we're talking about here, check out the magazine.

Jet Ski VCS

We at QJ.net have been given an exclusive sneak preview of what you may expect to see in Rockstar's upcoming PSP title Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. An abundance of information has been released on the game lately, but thanks to dedicated PSP magazine Go>Play, which isn't released until August 24th, we can give even more information on the sequel to the best-selling PSP title to date. Here's all what we have gathered:

Missions:
  • Many of the missions in VCS involve you taking multiple forms of transport, from sea to land, land to air or any number of combinations to keep the gamer's interest.
  • One mission involves Vic Vance (the lead character in GTA:VCS i.e you) performing stunts on a Jet Ski and then switching to a motorcycle. Although the storyline for this mission hasn't been revealed for obvious reasons, we can assume that this is one of those introductions to a new vehicle that Rockstar do so well.
  • Another mission is a little more pro-active, involving Vic piloting a chopper whilst Lance Vance (yes, he's back and as annoying as ever!) mans a machine gun mounted on the side of a chopper mowing down bikers.  Then Vic takes to the streets, infiltrating the bikers compound and finishing them off. Again, this seems like an introduction to choppers in VCS, much-like Tommy Vercetti's mission in Vice City that was well err...pretty much the same thing.
Tunes:

Our friends at Go>Play magazine also got a chance to hear a small selection of the 80's tracks that you could be listening to in October when the game is release. Although they may not make the final game, it's logical to assume that they wouldn't cut them out. 80's sounds such as Blondie, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Depeche Mode are just a few that you can expect, if you can remember the eighties. Oh wait, GTA gamers are all 18+ so most of you should remember the 80's, right?

More!
  • Vice City is in a period of change with many construction sites scattered around the place. Some landmarks you may remember from Vice City will still be under construction, but we are unaware if any of them have any significance to the game itself as of yet.
  • One brand new landmark which you won't remember from Vice City is the Chunder Wheel: a Ferris wheel that's a tribute to the wonder wheel in the 1979 cult classic The Warriors. Whats even better is that you can actually ride the Chunder Wheel, which makes an excellent sniping point.
  • The sniper rifle has been dramatically improved in Vice City Stories, with a much better look and a better draw distance, making it easier to use.
  • Those annoying loading times between islands are still present but have been dramatically reduced. Bad news for those who used to enjoy grabbing a coffee whilst you load the next island in Liberty City Stories.
Go>Play magazine containing this amazing preview amongst some great reviews and details on homebrew applications goes on sale on August 24th and can be bought from all good UK retailers or can ordered and shipped internationally through the company's website. Hurry up, there's only 2 days left!

Page 16

Experiment1106 has released the second issue of the German-language PSP magazine called "PSP Magzine." As CsL commented in the article about the previous issue of PSP Magzine, "Germans who understand both (English and German), are happy about a magazine written in their native language."

This issue talks about customizing Burnout Legends and integrating your own songs. There's also something about how to make thumbnails for your videos. The magazine features a special about PSP Rhythm 6.0 and includes demo songs from the authors of PSP Rhythm (the songs are included in the download).

Experiment1106 promised that each issue would be better than the previous one, and he obviously delivered on his promise: this issue is 3 times longer and has tons more content. It should continue to evolve and improve as others offer their help (Experiment1106 mentioned that Badlord was joining the team).

Now if only there were some nice German speakers to translate it (*hint*).
