PSPMancala v1.03 and PSPInt v1.1.0 from Zx-81 - Image 1 PSPMancala v1.03 and PSPInt v1.1.0 from Zx-81 - Image 2

Intrepid PlayStation Portable homebrew developer Zx-81 has recently made two homebrew releases, updated versions of PSPMancala and PSPInt. (The last time we saw PSPMancala was back in January while the previous version of PSPInt was reported last February.) In case you're not familiar with one or either of them, we'll give you a bit of a primer.

PSPMancala is based on a family of sowing board games called (you guessed it) Mancala. A number of games are derived from this game, but Zx-81's homebrew is based on the Awari incarnation. There are six pits with four pebbles each and the point of the game is to grab more pebbles than your opponent.

PSPInt on the other hand is the PSP port of Jzintv, an Intellivision emulator. Most of us are understandably unfamiliar with this really retro video game system as Intellivision is older than we are (Mattel first released it in 1979).

Zx-81's releases have bumped up both projects, PSPMancala to version 1.03 and PSPInt to version 1.1.0. Judging from the images from the dev's release threads, the projects were bumped up for PSP Slim support though Zx-81 writes, "and i hope with psp slim" in both releases.

You guys know the drill. Check out the readme files that come bundled with the downloads as they contain important information like the rules of the game, controls, and installation instructions. If you have any questions, feel free to ask away at the comments section below or at Zx-81's thread at the QJ.NET Forums. Enjoy!

PSPInt - Image 1This Intellivision emulator for the PSP would have to be among the closely watched homebrew emus ever released. With both Zx-81 and DrNicket working on it, users are assured of having an emu that runs smoothly and virtually no experiences of crashing.

That said, this update serves as further proof how the two are set on ensuring that whatever bugs and glitches encountered in the emu are fixed.

Like in this version, they've fixed the bug in the ROM file requester such that the PSP no longer hangs. Here's the full list of changes in this version...

Changelog:
  • Bug fix in Rom file requester (PSP hangs when the rom list was big and already sorted)
  • Add help menu
  • Screenshots are now saved in PNG format
More info, like installation instructions and other whatnots, can be found in the readme so make sure you check it out.

Int

After a few months of being silent, zx-81 is back in the saddle once more as he releases version 1.0.7 of his Intellivision Emulator for the PSP, PSPInt. Now a lot of you have been saying that there hasn't been that much news about PSP emulators nowadays, but it looks like things are bound to change. If this is the first time that you're encountering this emulator, we suggest you catch up on some reading in the form of the readme file that comes with the download.

Here's what's new on this version:
  • Reorganization of emulator menus plus new menu for settings
  • Modified icons and background images
  • The battery left percentage is now displayed in the emulator window
  • Watchdog to automatically return to the emulator menu when the battery is very low (< 5%) has been added
  • New feature to save and load a distinct setting file for each games
  • Delete files option (in the file selector)
zx-81 has once again outdone himself. As always, the package is released under the GPL license, so don't be surprised if the sources are bundled. Suggestions? Violent reactions? There's the comments section, leave your thoughts in it.

He averages about 4-5 releases a week! And trust me, they're all nice updates, just like this one. And this time, he has another partner- DrNicket, a member of our forums.

Here's what's new:
  • Added keyboard change skins option
  • Added beautiful keyboard skins

The usage instructions are in the readme. And as always, the package is released under the GPL license, so sources are bundled. Anyways, stay tuned in the weeks to come. I have something for you guys. :)

Intellivision

The Intellivision is the first system to feature downloadable games, but since it doesn't have a storage device, the games vanished once the machine is turned off. In 1981, General Instrument (manufacturer of the Intellivision's CPU) teamed up with Mattel to roll out the PlayCable, a device that allowed the downloading of Intellivision games via cable TV. Are you not thankful of Master Porters like Zx-81? Now you can have the Intellivision experience right in your PSP without having to go through all the trouble of downloading via cable TV.

The game allows the player to have control of a fighter plane guiding it through obstacles while dodging an assortment of unidentified flying objects to reach the level's end. Once the intro frame is up on the screen, press the Right trigger for options on the skill level of either one or two players. Launch the On-Screen Keyboard by Danzel and Jeff Chen to make a selection by pressing start. After making your choices just press Circle to go to the game proper.

I had to train my eyes to adjust to the graphics' perspective. It took me quite a while to actually know when an enemy plane is coming right at me. I also had my share of blowing my plane to smithereens because of the confusing directional buttons. The trick is, down is actually up and up is actually down. Pressing down makes your plane go higher to avoid those nasty walls and pressing up does the opposite, allowing you to blast those enemy planes.

Instructions on loading Intellivision ROM files, key mapping files and compilation is provided in the Read Me file along with the game.

PSPMSX

This is crazy! Zx-81 has just updated his PSPMSX MSX emulator to version 1.0.2 today. And no, you don't have triple vision - this is Zx-81's third release in one day! First Zx updated his PSPColem Colecovision emulator, then his PSPInt Intellivision emulator, and now his PSPMSX MSX emulator!

This version of PSPMSX adds an exit menu, a Load/Save/Del states menu, and changes the default MSX model to MSX2+ (which can be changed by editing the configuration file pspmsx.cfg). PSPMSX comes packaged with both 1.0 and 1.5 binaries along with the source, and comes under the GNU public licence. Read the README.txt and COPYING.txt for more information.

PSPInt

Looks like your in for a treat - here's a second offering of Zx-81 coding released today! Zx has updated his PSPInt Intellivision emulator for the PSP to version 1.0.2 today. The Intellivision was a home entertainment video console released by Mattel in 1980, which featured a numeric keyboard and a 16-bit color pallete, all of which could be seen on screen at once (which was pretty advanced at the time).

PSPInt is an Intellivision emulator port based on Jzintv, an Intellivision emulator for Windows, Linux, and MacOS. As with all of Zx-81's releases, PSPInt has been developed using Fanjita and Ditlew's eLoader Bock v0.97, and so should work on all homebrew-capable firmwares.

Note: Both 1.0 and 1.5 binary versions and the sources are included in the download. This package is under the GNU public licence, read the file 'COPYING.txt' for more information about it.
