Dark AleX began everything with his Open Edition (OE) firmwares. becus25 followed suit with custom firmwares dubbed as Increasing Edition (IE). This time, another coder known around the QJ.NET PSP Development Forums as FreePlay has come up with the Puzzle Bobble Custom Firmware.

Just like the name implies, this is very much entwined with the video game title Puzzle Bobble (that's Bust-a-Move). FreePlay mentioned that the idea behind this was inspired by DAX's original proof of concept. The features that come with Puzzle Bobble Custom Firmware include:
  • Puzzle Bobble Pocket, right on flash0. Built in. No need for a UMD or memory stick!
  • Sleek, sexy PSP XMB interface!
  • Whopping 64KB of free flash0 space!
  • Recovery booter - load your favorite recovery app to get back to a useful firmware!
  • Still runs homebrew (in kxploit format) and 1.50-compatible UMDs! Wowie zowie!
Currently, the project is still a WIP and FreePlay added that the firmware will be released in the near future as an installer that rips files from ISO dump and firmware dump. Check out the video below for a small preview.

Sony PSP - Image 1PSP homebrew coder ector has just come out into the open with a release we're sure the PSP community will take a shine to. It's the source codes for the Potemkin homebrew - an experimental Windows-based open source HLE PSP Emulator. Here are the noted features for this app:

Features: (end-user point of view)
  • Plays Puzzle Bobble Pocket JAP
  • Starts AI Go
  • Runs numerous demos from the PSP SDK
Technical Features:
  • Badly simulated PSP kernel
  • Mounts ISOs and CSOs (no DAX!)
  • Mounts Windows directories (no good UI yet for this)
Now, before you guys get too excited over this release, make sure to remember the following:
  • This is a source code release - Potemkin won't work unless its codes are properly compiled.
  • Expect plenty of bugs - ector reports that only three PSP games work: Pinball, Puzzle Bobble Pocket, and Puyo Puyo. Compatibility for other games is still under works.
  • Homebrew compatibility: There have been reports that Potemkin is currently unable to load .pbp but will run .elf files.
  • Potemkin needs Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 - Install this pack before attempting to run the homebrew. We've provided for a download link below.
  • Source Codes released under the GPL license - This is an invitation for fellow coders to try their luck with this program.
  • Check the README (aka RTFM) - All important author notes should be here
Given that this application's still a rough prototype, we discourage first-time users and non-programmers from trying it out. With that said, we'd like to congratulate ector for this achievement, and hope that a polished version gets released in the near future.

Before you cue in the drumroll and the marching band, nope, sorry, we don't have it yet. But, BUT! We have just received news that MikeDX was finally able to crack NeoGeo emulators - or the US state of New Jersey">NJ's NeoGeo emulator, MVSPSP v1.0, and it now supports WiFi!

MikeDX says that the WiFi multiplayer now works in the emu and syncs up every time, unlike with his previous efforts where one out of four attempts to connect would fail. He tried it out on a two player versus mode on Puzzle Bobble and it works perfectly. MikeDX even posted up a video of that in YouTube. But while that's really cool and all, y'all know he can do better than that right?

So...what he did was he made a video of two-player WiFi-connected Metal Slug 1 instead! Now, all we can do is sit and wait for the release of the WiFi-enabled MVSPSP, so while you do that, enjoy the video that MikeDX made.
