PSP Filer screenshot - Image 1Homebrew coder Mediumgauge has just released the latest version of his PSP Filer application. In case you're not familiar with his work, the app, which is now at v3.1, is a homebrew file organizer for the PlayStation Portable (PSP). What makes this program especially handy is that it allows users to do tasks such as swapping out custom themes or icons directly on their PSP, instead of having to do it on their PCs.

Mediumgauge has made the following changes for this version of PSP Filer:
  • Changed icon design - made by RaiderX
  • General:
    • Added language selector when Filer runs without filer.ini.
    • Added German mode. (thanks Experiment1106 to translate)
    • Modified analog pad speed in color edit mode.
    • Made mp3/wav playback stop when suspended or tuner launched.
  • Filer:
    • Fixed a bug that caused when seeing directory info on UMD.
    • Fixed when resuming from suspend mode, MS Duo was reloaded.
    • Added folder copy/move mode, and merged all copy, move, paste feature  to one.
    • Fixed a bug Filer went down when opening too deep folder structure.
  • Text viewer:
    • Modified up&down scroll speed on analog pad.
  • Binary viewer:
    • Modified up&down scroll speed on analog pad.
  • Picture viewer:
    • Changing picture by left&right, and back to filer, cursor position follows to the last picture you seen.
Be sure to view the bundle's README upon downloading for installation instructions, control details, and the dev's contact information (in case of bugs). First-time users may also want to be extra careful with this application, as PSP Filer takes some getting used to, and misusing it may lead to you bricking your PSP. Aside from that warning, we hope you enjoy the download.

Thanks to RaiderX for the heads up!

RaiderX's The Blue PSP Suite - Image 1

"Dude, what does my tattoo say?" "Sweet! Now what does mine say?" "Duuude!" "Suh-weeet!" "Dooood!" "Suite?" While the rambling tattoo conversation from "Dude, Where's My Car?" keeps running through our heads, this homebrew icon pack is sure looking sweet. Or suite, whichever way you look at it.

From the same guy who brought you the how-to guide on making 32-bit icons, The Blue PSP Suite is now made available for download. Although RaiderX said he didn't want to release this due to the possibility of it getting over-used by a lot of people (and we wouldn't be surprised if it did), he's been kind enough to send us a tip-off and make it available for ya'll. So, what exactly are we looking at here? Here's a rundown of the main features:
  • High quality 32-bit Main icons and submenu icons.
  • Battery indicator, Volume indicators, Background wave, Monthly themed wallpapers
  • Colored X, O, / icons, Recolored scrollbar and progress bar
  • A full res wallpaper for use from the photo menu ("PSPii")
  • Mario Coin loading/busy icon
  • Custom font ("Continuum"), Custom selected text highlight bar, Custom default game, music, video icons, Custom text divider line
As you can see from the tons of pics below (more behind the "Full Article" link), the name of the icon pack can be a bit misleading since you can choose other colors aside from blue. All related notes, credits, instructions, and file lists are found in the readme. It'd do you wise to take a look at it. If you do end up (over-)using his icon pack, we've also provided a jump to his Deviant Art page (see the Via link). Send him some "suite" luvin', why don'cha?

XMB custom icon - Image 1 While there are several custom-made XMB icons out there to go with the RCO editors in circulation, a lot of us just prefer our very own personalized sets. Now, in case you're among those folks but find yourselves short in the skills department, homebrew developer RaiderX is coming in with help.

He has just set up a 32-bit icon tutorial at the boards, which should provide basic steps for beginners on how to make their own custom XMB icons via their PC to the PSP. But before you visit the tutorial, make sure to have these ready:
  • Photoshop (For editing)
  • Image icon (What you're planning to use for your XMB)
  • Hex editing skills (Or, if you prefer an easier way...)
  • RCO editor (Zinga's homebrew is recommended)
Who says the veteran programmers don't look out for the new guys? For beginners with an inkling for some XMB icon pimpin' to go with their mondo custom waves, on to the discussion boards!

Custom firmware with Devhook

For those of you who've been bitten by the custom firmware bug, rejoice! One of our forum members, califrag, has been busy trying all sorts of stuff under devhook. Although it was obvious that some of the modded stuff would work under devhook, I'd still thank califrag for going through it all and giving a list of what's compatible and what's not.

There is one pre-requisite though. Don't try this while you're drunk. Messing around with applications like X-Flash can be nasty if you're not in the right frame of mind. So with that in mind let's begin.

What you'll need:
  • Devhook (preferable 0.44 or 0.45) fully set up with a working firmware dump (again, 2.71 preferably).
  • A custom firmware - Either Dark_Alex or harleyg's mods will be enough.
  • X-Flash V12.
  • The ttf2pgf application if you want to change fonts.
What you can customise:
  • Debranded Intro Screen (Remove "Sony Computer Entertainment" from Boot or Change cold-boot sound)
  • Disable "Network Update" icon (still says "Network Update" but clicking does nothing)
  • Disable Wavy Background effect in XMB
  • Change Gameboot Video (Use ANY .pmf video under 1.5mb)
  • Change Wallpapers (Although you can do it normally as well)
  • Change XMB Font
Remember that mixing and matching files between firmwares can be buggy. Although it wouldn't result in a brick if you're just working with Devhook, it can make emulation much less enjoyable. So please remember to store a backup of your working dump somewhere safe, so that even if the modifications don't work, you can easily revert back to your tried and tested working dump.

Once you've backed up your dump, you're ready to begin modding your Devhook firmware.

The rest of the guide after the jump!
