Celestial Cunning version 0.3 - Image 1 Celestial Cunning version 0.3 - Image 2

Homebrew developer Slicer4ever has released the latest version of the homebrew game for the PSP, Celestial Cunning, now upped to version 0.3. Celestial Cunning is a real-time strategy (RTS) game set in space.

For this version, Slicer4ever rewrote the game back to 2D. This was made mainly to have "better gfx and controls". This change has however resulted to "loss in speed". But that's something we can all live with, right? For the sake of better controls, it's a minute sacrifice, as some people have commented that the controls for this homebrew game were a little complicated. Reverting to 2D might address that little annoyance.

The homebrew developer says that this version is also the 10th "complete rebuild including [the] PSP and PC versions". There are still some bugs that need to be addressed, but Slicer4ever promises to attend to those in the next versions. Maps have also been included in version 0.3 of Celestial Cunning.

So, download the file now to get started. But make sure to read the readme (duh) so you'll know exactly how to install this. Info on the controls is also there. Enjoy!

Slicer4ever has released the latest version of his homebrew game Celestial Cunning on our QJ.Net Forums. Celestial Cunning version 0.2 has some changes that fans of the first release might be interested to know about.

This new release brings these following changes:
  • Units are now built instead of instant building
  • There is a Main Menu
  • Added Map Maker
  • Support for "maybe 10 maps"
  • Slight tweaks to AI
The game still retains its RTS roots and looks to be a very interesting play, once you get used to the controls that is. There are so many controls that you'll really be referring to the readme for the first half hour of playing the game. Once you do get used to it, it quickly becomes second nature and you'll be building ships and mining properly in no time.

The readme warns that there are still bugs in the game, and Slicer4ever is aware of them. He is requesting that people should only report game crash bugs to him though so he can get to fixing those. Check out the file in the folder named "readme or die in 30 secs.txt" for instructions on how to install and play the game.

Celestial Cunning - beta release for homebrew space RTS - Image 1

Slicer4ever has released a beta version of Celestial Cunning over on our PSP Development forums. According to the developer, the game still requires optimization but there's now a bit of AI in it, although all it does is defend instead of attack. This version of Celestial Cunning has five available units. Most of the available commands work as well.

Celestial Cunning is an ambitious homebrew RTS game with a sci-fi flavor. You can see from the screenshots here that it's still in its early stages, but it does look quite promising. If you have any comments, suggestions, or if you want to help out with this project, click on the "visit" link below.

Please remember to read the readme file included in the download for usage instructions and a short overview of the controls and icons.

It's one thing for a programmer to take his Lua homebrew, go back to scratch, and re-translate it into C. It's quite another thing to take that new C code and bring it a step further by adding more features and capabilities. Enter slicer4ever and you've got yet another homebrew junkie worth looking up to.

a pic of an early versionHis Block Attack homebrew started out in its early Lua stages, and now it's been un-Lua'ed with his recent v0.3 release. Today, it's now pegged at Block Attack v0.4. The concept remains the same: just dodge the enemy blocks and pick up the "live" ones. Here are the new features he's added for v0.4:
  • high scores
  • difficulty
  • customizable options
There are five difficulty levels to choose from: from easy to insane mode. Settings can also be customized to change your box's color, enemy color, or "live" box color to either red, blue, or green. He mentioned that he would have wanted to put in some music too, however, he notes that it drops the speed too much. So right now, he's planning to incorporate that feature in a future version.
