PSP Slim - Image 1QJ.NET reader CJ has pointed us towards a new homebrew release from Chilly Willy and CaptShoe. The collaboration between ChillyWilly and CaptShoe has resulted in Snes9xTYL 0.4.2 ME for the PSP Slim, an update of the non-ME PSP Slim version AhMan released a while back. Here's the changelog:
  • Ported to use 3.xx compatible MediaEngine library.
  • Fixed button detection in key redefine screen when map analog to pad is enabled.
  • Sound issues reduced, but not entirely. This would require more time.
  • L+R functionality replaced by Home button. To quit, tap Home twice.
  • The time to get back to the XMB should now be decreased. Homehook.prx courtesy of NJ.
  • Simplified welcome message with the ability to disable completely.
  • Option to turn off intro animation.
  • New snesadvance.dat (speedhacks) by Illegal Machine and Warkobo. Thanks!
  • New XMB graphics.
Aside from bringing SNES emulation goodness to the PSP Slim, this SNES emulator also works fine on old PlayStation Portables. According to Chilly Willy, this version is hardcoded to run at 333 MHz since the PSP Slim hangs when you change the CPU speed while MediaEngine is running.

This version of Snes9xTYL also burns up a lot of juice. Chilly Willy says that "sleep mode has been disabled since sleep would have done nothing at all". Both the CPU speed change and the battery drain issues are being worked on and should be fixed in a later release.

Please read the documentation files included in the download before installing this application.

Snes9xTYL - Image 1

A lot have been waiting for an update to the Snes9xTYL SNES emulator for the PSP. And after about a two month hiatus for the said emu, we finally find a little version bump up on our laps. This time, the update doesn't come from Ruka (the guy who released the latest update) nor YoyoFR and Laxer3a (the original coders of Snes9xTYL).

A patch was rolled out by davex, the same coder who did a number on CPS1PSP a few months ago. This patch builds on Ruka's recent release, so you better get that first before you decide to go any further. The whole download just might take around 1MB of your bandwidth time, but that 1MB surely would get far. davex incorporates two very useful features for the emulator:
  • Quick save state [press RTRIGGER + SELECT] and quick load state[ RTRIGGER + START]
  • Auto-fire [Available in CONTROLS main menu]
For this patch, davex gives thanks to the previous devs who've worked on Snes9xTYL and made possible for it to happen. Make sure you check out the readme and other text files included in the download bundle below on how to patch your emulator.

PSP - Image 1Don't let the name fool you, guys. While the SNES9xTYL SNES emulator for the PSP is indeed going to be updated courtesy of homebrew coder Yoyofr, this particular variant was created by Japanese developer Ruka, whom the readers may recognize for creating the NesterJ emulator.

We can't really say what's new in this Beta release due to a lack of a proper changelog (the README's in Japanese), although other people online have been giving mixed reports.

On one hand, it was reported that games like Super Mario World, Mario RPG, and Donkey Kong Country appear to be running smoothly, if not faster, on version ++ Beta. On the other hand, some testers noted that games like StarFox and Starfox 2 didn't appear to work at all, and that some games ran as they did in version 0.4.2.ME.

The file bundle is available below, although in light of the mixed reactions the app's been getting so far, we strongly advice would-be users to be careful. With that said, we hope the guys enjoy the download. We'll let you know in case we pick up word on either Yoyofr or fruitval's latest additions to this highly-coveted emulator project.

Our thanks goes to palyons for giving us this hot tip!

UPDATE: Due to your comments, we re-checked the README file of SNES9xTYL++ (BETA). Apparently, Ruka didn't want the file to be re-distributed. And because the wishes of the developer comes first, we have removed the download link to the emulator. We thank you for pointing that out.

SNES_TYL9x - Image 1To those of you who still remember, homebrew developers Yoyofr and Laxer3a decided to stop working on Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) emulator SNES_TYL9x back in September 2006.

They didn't left the program in limbo though, thank God, because they released the source code before they bid the application goodbye. Now, over at Yoyofr's online forum, another developer - fruitval - posted that he's actually working on a new emulator based on the duo's source code.

However, the coder mentioned that he's been hitting some snags with the project. Quite interestingly, Yoyofr himself posted the following: "I tried some of the latest pspsdk and had some trouble with my 3.10 OE psp. I'll update the source code and have snes9xTYL work with the latests Dark Alex firmware asap."

This means, in case you still don't get it folks, that a new SNESTYL9x is coming soon. The emulator, under Yoyofr's and Laxer3a's caring hands, ran until version 0.4.2. At that level, SNES_TYL9x is already great with only a few possible improvements needed. Stay tuned to QJ.Net for the latest updates regarding this development 'cause we'll be glued to it 24/7.

Thanks blackrave for the tip!

Circus NES game - Image 1It's not like we don't have NES emulators for the PSP. PSP users have had the feature-packed Snes9xTYL and NesterJ emulators for quite some time but that doesn't mean another NES emulator isn't welcome - after all, there hasn't been a new NES emulator in quite some time.

Today, Tinnus has released a proof of concept NES emulator for PSP, a module from his Little John package of emulators for PalmOS. The NES emulator features:
  • Full speed (@333Mhz and v-sync ON)
  • Full screen
  • Full sound at 44 KHz
  • Full controls (D-Pad, X = A, O = B)
  • Biggest mapper and overall compatibility ever (I'm yet to find a game that doesn't work)
The biggest thing that this emulator doesn't feature is any type of configuration. This could decrease compatibility with certain ROMs, but remember this is a proof of concept, not the final version of the emulator.

Well, why release a POC so early on? Well, remember the Little John package for PalmOS we mentioned earlier? Currently it emulates the NES, SNES, Gameboy/Gameboy Color, Sega Genesis/Megadrive, Sega Master System, Sega Game Gear, Bandai Wonderswan/Wonderswan Color, and the NeoGeo Pocket/NeoGeo Pocket Color for PalmOS - now Tinnus is planning on porting this to the PSP.

That's right, in the future you should be able to play games from all of the listed consoles using just one emulator from the Little John project. We're quite excited about this and we'll be looking out for more releases from Tinnus. Stay tuned.
