Sony PlayStation Portable - Image 1If you still have dreams of becoming a respectable homebrew developer you have to start somewhere. Fortunately, PSP homebrew developer Raphael, Tomaz, and InsertWittyName has come up with a very flexible game writing engine for the PSP named triEngine.

Check out the features of this versitile game engine after the jump!

Tiled v2 - Image 1 Tiled v2 - Image 2

Tomaz is back with the update to his homebrew puzzle game Tiled. The game is the the PSP version of  a slide puzzle Tomaz created for the PC a while back.

Tiled v.2 has the following changelog:
  • Added option to choose between 4x4, 6x6, and 8x8 puzzles
  • Added a timer and a store the best time for each puzzle.
  • Made some nicer fading effects
  • Added a background image
  • Added a penguin puzzle as requested
We might as well remind you again that this game has only been tested on FW1.5. If you were able to play Tiled v.1 on other FW versions, the rest of the homebrew community would appreciate that info (in other words, tell us if you got this to work for other FW). Tomaz would also appreciate other ideas you might have to make Tiled even better.

Dragontiger!

Have you ever seen a 36-tile slide puzzle? Those things are so bloody annoying that you're tempted to throw the puzzle at the wall to dislodge the pieces and just stick them back in their proper order on the board. Thank goodness Tomaz kept the tiles down to 16.

Made by Tomaz, Tiled is a slide puzzle game that has a rather lengthy history. Tomaz notes that this game is a port of something he made on the PC, and he's using it to test the 2D portion of his PSP game engine. We don't know if that means he's going to be making something so spectacular that we'll all be weeping in the sheer awesomeness of it in the future, but it's nice to hope. Tomaz, if you're reading this, what are you planning, eh?

Anyway, he's only tested it on Firmware 1.5, so you'll have to do a little experimentation to see if the game works on other firmwares. Regardless, it's a nice puzzle game, and we hope to see more puzzles in the future, especially one with penguins, as Tactical Paper so aptly put it on the forums.

Directions:

  • Use d.pad left / right in the menu to choose which image to use for the puzzle.
  • X will select that image as puzzle and start the game.
  • Once inside the game, the d-pad moves the marker and hitting X while selecting a tile that is next to the empty tile moves it there.
  • TRIANGLE shows what the puzzle should look like once its completed.
  • Start exits the current game and puts you back in the menu.
  • Select takes a screenshot.
  • When a puzzle is beaten pressing any key will put you back in the menu.
