PSP phone concept - Image 1Amidst all the concept art, the discussions and even the denials, rumors of a PSP phone live on. According to Mobile Entertainment, insiders have suggested that Sony Ericsson is indeed exploring the possibility of a gaming-centric mobile phone.

Those clamoring for a PSP phone, however, will have to wait a bit longer, it seems. As Mobile Entertainment noted, Sony Ericsson's gaming phone - which is reportedly scheduled for a February 2008 launch - will not carry the PSP branding.

What it will have, though, is motion sensitivity for "Wii-like gameplay" on a handset - despite some recent mobile handsets already implementing tilt and vibration detection using their built-in cameras. Meanwhile, the new Sony Ericsson phone will also reportedly have a games-oriented UI and style as well as other technical innovations.

Will this new gaming phone end up as a potential PSP competitor? Sony Ericsson has already built a good reputation with its Cyber-shot and Walkman phones, while the PSP is expected to enjoy higher sales numbers this month when the PSP Slim hits.

What do you guys think about this possible competitor? Leave a comment below and share your thoughts.

a PSP phone might be coming up - Image 1Rumor has it that Sony is set to make more gaming phones through the Sony Ericsson line. But don't get too excited just yet, it's just talk (for now at least), what with all the success of the Playstation Portable and all...

Come to think of it, such a move will be very logical for the electronics giant Sony. The PSP is considered a success, and there has been a measured increase in support of the mobile gaming platform. Already, Sony's Cybershot and Walkman phones pack a lot of media features, boasting of a PSP-like interface. The next big move might be an all-out PSP phone.

Some very excited sources say that after the Cybershot and the Walkman phone, which do take after Sony's great ideas, a PSP phone will come out eventually - sort of like being part of the line. People wonder, though if a gaming mobile unit is ever going to take off or not, like the not-so-successful Nokia N-gage. Then again, if this comes out, it'll be a PSP - and a phone!

PSP Value Pack - Image 1When the PSP was first released, Ken Kutaragi announced that it would be the Walkman of this century. While this sounded a bit questionable, it made people wonder if it could be possible. The handheld market was for a long time Nintendo's domain, and all previous challengers have been put down. So now, a good three years after the PSPs release, BBC took a bold step to analyze how the handheld's doing.

While its jump from shipping half a million units in 2004 to a whopping 24.7 million as off December 2006 may sound impressive, Nintendo still has the majority of the market share. Nintendo has shipped 35m units of the DS and DS Lite within that same timespan.

These numbers tell only half the story. It seems that the PSP sales have dropped by 72% this holiday season, although software sales increased by 24% according to PGR. This could be a sign that the market is already saturated. In terms of games, the Nintendo DS has a larger library with more games being released for it as well as large libraries of GBA and GB games.

So what are the future plans for the PSP? The people at Sony are envisioning the PSP and its PS3 connectivity to be the next big thing. The Remote Play feature will allow the PSP to wirelessly access pictures, videos, and audio content stored on the PS3 up to a range of around 25-30 meters. In addition to this, access to the MP3 Walkman, iPods, and even digital cameras connected to the PS3 will be enabled.

The PSP becoming the Walkman of the 21st century might be a tall order, and judging from the numbers... We better wait and see what else Sony has in store to realize Kutaragi's vision for the PSP.
