PSP coder vandal has just released a new C-coded game for the community's perusal, dubbed QUAD. The objective of this game is for players to match the shapes on the bottom boxes to the dropping boxes. Players can do so by pushing the corresponding shapes on their PSP's D-Pad; Press circle to make it a circle, press square to make it a square, press "X" to make it an "X", and press triangle to make it a triangle.

That's all the details for the moment on vandal's very first homebrew game - he gives special thanks to Yeldarb and Insomniac for their tutorials, BTW. Enjoy the download, and make sure to thank the developer for making this game.

Sony's PSP - Image 1Anissian has rolled out a very useful tutorial for all those who are just getting into the groove of PSP programming, PSP Modules Tutorial v1.

We've already brought you quite a lot of PSP tutorials like this one (including Yeldarb's PSP Programming Tutorial and Glynnder's Lua Coding 101), but we never get tired of posting new ones that abound because they provide a lot of people with much-needed help in programming.

So anyway, Anissian's Modules Tutorial describes the use of modules in the PSP in basic newbie-friendly terms and then gradually progresses to the more complex stuff. However, this tutorial should not be mistaken for an all-in-one PSP 101 because (in the words of Anissian) his module tutorial "aims at covering the 'what next' aspect of PSP programming" and not one that's for "starting from scratch."

To be more specific, Anissian's tutorial is released on the premise that the readers have at least a basic knowledge of C and the PSPSDK (a how-to on compiling and running Hello World apps), among many others. According to Anissian, these are the following purposes of his tutorial:
  • to describe the basic steps in creating modules, including pure export modules and applications
  • to explain in detail how the PSP kernel manages the modules and their import and export functions
  • teach users how to patch in memory modules
So if you have time to spare and are very much interested in learning the basic stuff on PSP programming, why not get drunk on PSP knowledge and make productive use of your precious time, eh?

Snakman!

Very early in the year, we mentioned something about Snakman, the love child of Pac-Man and Snake for your 2-2.6 version PSPs. Strangely enough, Snakman is back, thanks to a TIFF port of Yeldarb's homebrew by Robert A. and Percival.

TIFF Snakman 0.2 is actually the first release of Snakman for the 2.7-2.8 firmwares, and looks to be a faithful port of the original Snakman. One thing they do mention is the current absence of an exit screen, but this should be patched up with a new release soon enough.

The question is... can you eat up all the pellets without getting eaten yourself? We'll see. Be sure to thank Yeldarb, Robert A., and Percival if you see them on a forum, alright?

PSPYeldarb has just provided some source code he has developed for the PSP. It's an arrow that one can move around the screen. This requires an external image, in this case 'arrow.png' and depends on the graphics.h header.

This program loads in a "sprite" (in this case it's just a simple arrow icon). I have made four frames of the sprite and put them all on the same image. The code splits these into separate "images" in an array. Basically, it's a way to get frames out of a single image (that way you don't have to mess with a ton of different image files).

The different frames in this case are different rotations of the arrow sprite. You can control the arrow with the arrow buttons. Turn the trail of arrows on and off with the triangle button. Left trigger slows down the speed, right trigger slows it up. "X" is the gas button.

Basically, by studying this source code (which, admittedly, is very simple) you will know how to make a sprite travel around the screen (bound by the edges), how to erase the image on subsequent frames, how to control speed, and how to pseudo-rotate a sprite.
