Capcom's sales up, net income down for 2007 - Image 1

Thanks much to their zombie shooter Dead Rising, top performer Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, and PSP phenomenon MonsterHunter Freedom 2nd, Capcom's fiscal year (FY) for 2007 saw a boost in operating income, nearing almost 46% in increase at 9.6 billion Yen (US$ 792.86 million).

This was following a 6.1% increase in sales, amounting to 74.5 billion Yen (US$ 615.29 million), as reported by an unaudited financial report filed by Capcom for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2007. But the company suffered a net income decrease, attributing it to a review of tax valuation reserve for deferred assets.

Having formerly announced their plans to expand to the West, Capcom insisted that the company's move is right on track, after noting millions of units sold for each of their three titles - two for the Xbox 360 and one for the PSP. Lost Planet is being ported over to the PC and should be available soon in glorious DirectX 10 glory.

DS title Mega Man Star Force and three PS2 titles - Devil Kings 2, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Okami - have also performed well last year, while Capcom noted an unsatisfactory performance of their arcade operations. Their arcade division may have garnered a 12.8% increase in sales of 13 billion Yen (US$ 107.37 million), but suffered a 17.6% loss of 2 billion Yen (US$ 16.52 million) in operating income.

If you've enjoyed the series of release for the homebrew game CS Combined Assault, then get ready as the latest installment for that brew is already here. Now at v0.5, CS Combined Assault was created and has been regularly updated by the coder who goes by the name of Stealth Kill. From his previous release (which already had a lot of improvements to begin with) he adds these new features to v0.5:
  • AD-Hoc 1-4 Players working
  • Better Weapons (really good)
  • Bots Deleted (I add them in the next version)
  • Deleted unused Maps/Models/frames
  • Added "DesertHouse" Map
  • Added "Arena" Map (funmap very small but good for Ad-hoc)
  • Added "Zombie Room" Map (funmap test for Ad-hoc [play in coop mode])
  • Added Barret
  • Added PSG1
  • Added Mp5
  • Added Mp5sd
  • Added Zoom function
Meanwhile, Stealth Kill also notes that several more things will be improved by the next time that he announces another release. Among the things that need fixing would be that maps cannot be selected while in training mode.

Anyway, this latest release is promising to be another fun game for the community to enjoy and we're looking forward to Stealth Kill's work each time (how could we not, after watching the sample vid below?). As usual, If you're thinking of installing this game in your PSP, then make sure to read the readme file that the author of this homebrew has included.

Silent Hill goes shooter - Image 1

We've already reported to you folks the other day about the Fighter of the Century tournament for Virtua Fighter 5 during the annual AOU exhibition at Japan. Well, here's more from the event.

Proving that the world of coin-op isn't dead – or lost in the mist, Japanese news site GAME Watch reports that the people from Konami gave their Silent Hill light-gun game a debut at the AOU Arcade Game Exhibition 2007. The game's entitled Silent Hill: The Arcade, and players can choose to be either Eric or Tina (the two lead characters), and they step into the foggy other-world that is Silent Hill, where in you have to fend off undead nurses, creepy babies, and even good old Pyramid Head.

The gun holds ten shots and shooting off-screen reloads. The red button in the panel has to be pressed at the right moment to progress in the game.

A semi-zombie shooter set in the world of Silent Hill? Will it work? Is it even in tune with the more psychological style of (shock/creep) horror that Silent Hillis known for? What do you guys think?

Zombie Snake - Image 1

GamesRadar alerts folks that in a recent interview with Edge magazine, the legendary Hideo Kojima, head of super-studio Kojima Productions, revealed his unlikely and unhinged vision for a zombie-themed game. According to Kojima, he's "less interested in the idea of the living dead than the fact you can turn people just by biting them." So much is his focus on "turning" people, that he even considers implementing his take on zombie-apocalypse in a massively-multiplayer online environment.

He explains:

Imagine a large town where half the inhabitants are zombies. Users would subscribe, get inside the town and get bitten. At that stage they become undead and can't control their character - all they can do is modify the camera angles.

...They'd see their character attacking humans and have to pay just to watch! ...The only way they could end it is by opening another account, hunting themselves down and killing themselves. Of course, the problem is that your second character can get bitten as well.

Not getting to control your character if you get turned? Having to hunt your former "self" and kill it (if it got zombified it's an "it" now), just to progress the game? Get bombarded by cinematics of mindless zombies? All too silly? Well, despite Kojima's own reservations about his over-the-top and unlikely Zombie-MMO, he says that he won't rule the idea out. GamesRadar reports that should he feel that the moment is opportune, he will "take some time to prepare. Very seriously."

Well, the cinematic aspect of the whole thing is trademark Kojima.

Since the new year is here (or has come and gone for you), it's time to have a bit of fun. Instead of talking about Saddam Hussein's hanging or the impending zombie apocalypse, I've decided to come up with a short list of my favorite game-related vids.

I've always had a penchant for picking up videos. For the most part, I find videos of games here and there, and sometimes, some of those videos just stick in your head long after you've seen them.

Here are my top five game-related bits of weirdness, which anyone with a degree in googling can hunt down and download for themselves. In no particular order...

Street Fighter Salsa

I do some ballroom dancing myself, so this was funny to watch. As you can see, this is a Korean salsa competition where the contestants are playing Ryu and Chun Li. Definitely weird, but you can see some of the obvious Street Fighter references in their routine, giving this a definite spot in my top 5.

Less ballroom, more weirdness if you click on "Full Article".
